Officers within the Tactical Response Group are trained to work in 'high risk' situations. They provide support to other areas of the Western Australia Police as well as other agencies.
Tasks include dealing with armed offenders, attending sieges and providing a State wide counter-terrorist capability. As well as tactical operators other specialist positions within the TRG are marksman, bomb technicians, tactical intelligence and negotiators.
Tactical operators stationed at the TRG undergo training in a range of areas, including but not limited to tactical roping, fieldcraft, water bourne operations medic's courses and training in the use of chemical, biological and radiological equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus and various weapons systems.
The TRG selection process for tactival operators is extremely challenging and only a small percentage of applicants are successful. Police officers interested in a tactical operators position at the TRG must be off probation. Applicants are required to successfully complete rigorous psychological and physical testing and a close quarters tactics course to gain entry into the unit.
