If you wish to have your current or previous policing experience in a compatible police jurisdiction recognised then the WA Police 'Lateral Entry' pathway may be for you.

Minimum Requirements for Lateral Entry

Must have prior operational policing experience (post probationary period) in a compatible policing jurisdiction within the last five years.

How do I Apply?

All applicants with prior service with a compatible policing jurisdiction in Australia or New Zealand or those from compatible overseas who already have permanent residency or Australian citizenship will need to complete a Compatible Police Service (CPS) application form as well as a Transitional Officer application form. To find out more, download the application criteria.

The WA Police accept applications from suitably qualified external applicants for Superintendent and Inspector positions. The positions are advertised on an infrequent basis through the www.jobs.wa.gov.au website.

Please note: The number of required supplementary documents listed towards the end of the application might vary from applicant to applicant.

Selection Process

Once your application has been accepted, you will need to undertake a selection process. This process is at the discretion of the Sworn Selection Manager and can vary according to experience and qualifications. It can include all or part of the following:

  • An integrity check - a background check performed to identify any criminal offences and traffic infringements.
  • An Entrance Evaluation - to test your literacy and numeracy skills as well as your practical intelligence. Sample questions and an answer sheet are available to help. Once you have completed the Sample questions you can review your results.
  • Fitness Test - includes a beep test (shuttle run), push-pull machine to test ability to crowd control and a sit-up in a specified manner.

Download the audio file beep test for your mp3 player. Measure out 20 m placing markers at the start and end of this distance. Listen to the audio file to start the beep test.

For more information download a Physical Evaluation. Should you need assistance in preparing for the Physical Evaluation, you can download a document containing general guidelines.
  • A short interview with Recruiting Branch.
  • A psychological evaluation - All applicants will be required to undergo a standardised personality test comprised of a number of typed questions as well as an interview with a psychologist.
  • A medical check - prior to final acceptance and after the completion of the other assessments, the applicant is required to attend a nominated medical physician and undergo a medical examination. This examination is designed to ensure that fitness and health are of a high standard and that there is no reason why the applicant cannot carry out all the duties required as a police officer; and
  • Performance reports and leave details will also be required from any prior policing jurisdiction.

To apply, please complete a full Application Form and also a Recognition of Prior Service form.
